Billet vs Stock KDSS Parts: What Changes

Billet gets used as a marketing word often enough that it has stopped meaning much. It does mean something specific, and it is not automatically the right answer for every part on the truck.

What billet actually is

A billet part is machined from a solid block of material. A stamped part is pressed into shape from sheet. A cast part is poured. The difference that matters is grain structure. Machining from solid keeps the material continuous, so the part does not have the stress risers a stamping gets at its bend radii.

That is why stamped factory sway bar clamps spread under load and machined ones do not. It is not that aluminum beats steel. It is that a solid machined section beats a folded sheet section at resisting that particular kind of deflection.

Where we use billet, and which alloy

6061 aluminum goes into the front and rear sway bar clamps and the front KDSS link. It machines cleanly, anodizes well, and holds up to the clamping loads these parts see.

7075 aluminum appears where the part carries more load, including the rear sway bar drop kit and parts of the Pan Hard Bar, which also uses chromoly and stainless where those materials suit the job better.

6061 with delrin at pivot points, because a hard plastic bearing surface outlasts rubber and does not introduce the flex a bushing does.

Where steel is the right answer

This is the part most billet marketing skips. Our B.O.T.C.K. and B.O.P.C.K. correction kits are quarter-inch mild steel, powder coated. Not aluminum, and that is deliberate.

A track bar correction bracket takes a large lateral load through a small mounting area, and it takes it repeatedly through the full travel of the suspension. Steel at that thickness handles that load path with a margin that makes sense for a part holding your axle where it belongs. Aluminum would need to be considerably bulkier to do the same job.

Anyone selling you a billet aluminum track bar bracket on the grounds that billet is simply better has skipped the part where you ask what the part actually has to survive.

How to tell what you are buying

Look for the alloy, not the word. A listing that says billet without naming 6061 or 7075 is telling you about the process and nothing about the material.

Look at the finish. Anodizing is for aluminum and it is a surface conversion, so it does not chip the way paint does. Powder coating is for steel and it is a coating, which is why a fresh powder coated part can have slightly tight bolt holes until you ease them.

Look at the section thickness where the load goes in. That tells you more than the material name.

Is billet aluminum stronger than steel?

No. Steel is stronger for a given section. Billet describes how a part is made, not what it is made of.

Why is the correction kit not billet?

It is quarter-inch mild steel because that is the right material for a bracket carrying lateral axle load.

Does anodizing wear off?

It is a conversion of the surface rather than a layer on top of it, so it does not flake the way a coating can.
