This is an overview of the job, not a wiring diagram. The wiring specifics differ by platform and year, and the authoritative instructions are the ones in the box with your kit. Follow those. What follows is what to expect and what to sort out before you start.
Is this a job you should do yourself?
It is a wiring job, not a fabrication job. If you have run a set of auxiliary lights and you are comfortable identifying circuits and making clean connections, this is within reach.
If you have never pulled a dash panel or you are not confident testing a circuit, this is a reasonable one to hand to a shop. It is a short job for someone who does it regularly, and a long afternoon for someone learning on their own truck.
Before you start
Confirm fitment for your exact year and platform. This is the single most common cause of a stalled install.
Disconnect the battery. Read the instructions all the way through once before you touch anything, so you know where the job is going.
Lay the harness out and identify every connector against the instructions while it is still on the bench. Working out what a plug is for while you are upside down under the dash is how mistakes happen.
What the job looks like
Broadly, the harness connects the switch to the relevant vehicle circuit, and the switch mounts in a dash location. Where our factory fit dash switch is used, that location is an existing blank, which is what makes the result look like it came from the factory.
Route the harness away from anything hot, anything sharp, and anything that moves. Secure it properly rather than leaving it to find its own way. A harness that rubs through in six months will fail at the least convenient moment.
Test before you reassemble the dash. Confirm the switch does what it is supposed to and that no fault lights have appeared, then put the trim back.
If something is not right
Recheck connections before assuming a vehicle fault. The overwhelming majority of problems after an install are a connector not fully seated or a circuit misidentified.
If a warning light appears and stays after a recheck, stop and get it looked at rather than driving on it.

Can I buy just the harness?
Yes. The harness only option exists for people who already have a switch.

An experienced installer will be quicker than a first timer by a wide margin. Give yourself an unhurried afternoon rather than an hour before you need the truck.
