Rear Sway Bar Drop Kit: When a 3 Inch Lift Needs One on a KDSS Truck

By Dom Ruangnol

Once a KDSS truck is lifted around 3 inches, the rear of the truck starts asking for attention. The track bar is steeper, the shocks are longer, and the rear KDSS strut is now working from a different starting point than Toyota designed it for. A rear sway bar drop kit is one of the parts that comes up in every conversation about this, and it is also one of the most misunderstood.

This post covers what the rear bar actually does on a KDSS truck, how to tell when the geometry is off, and what our billet drop kit changes. It also covers what it does not change, because that matters just as much.

What does the rear bar do on a KDSS truck?

On a conventional truck, the rear sway bar links the two sides of the axle so the body rolls less in corners. On a KDSS truck, the rear bar is part of a bigger system. It connects to the frame through a KDSS strut on the driver side and a fixed link on the passenger side, and the strut is tied hydraulically to the front of the truck. On pavement, the system holds and the bars stay stiff. At low speed off road, the system lets fluid move and the bars allow more articulation. For the full walkthrough of how the front and rear pieces work together, see our KDSS explainer.

The important detail for a lifted truck is that the strut has an operating range. It is designed to work within a certain length. When you lift the truck, the frame moves up and away from the sway bar, and the strut gets pulled toward the end of that range. That is what a drop kit is for: it repositions the system so the strut piston stays in its factory operating range.

The other detail is the passenger-side fixed link. It is a simple steel piece, and it is a known weak point. In a hard hit, like dropping off a ledge or landing on a rock, it can bend. A bent link pushes the sway bar out of alignment, and that can then force the KDSS strut into a bad angle and damage it.

How do I know the geometry is off?

You do not need special tools to spot most of the signs. With the truck at ride height and again with the rear at full droop, look for these:

  • The sway bar is hitting the track bar. On a lifted truck the two can come into contact. Look for rub marks or shiny spots on either part.
  • The rear does not droop fully. If you are running extended-travel rear shocks and the axle stops short of what the shocks allow, the sway bar and strut may be what is holding it back.
  • The passenger-side fixed link is bent. Sight down it. Even a slight bend means the bar is no longer sitting where it should.
  • The KDSS strut sits at an odd angle. Compare it to how it looked before the lift, or to photos of a stock truck. A strut that is cocked over is under stress.
  • A bigger spare will not fit. If you are trying to run a larger spare in the factory location and it hits, sway bar position is often part of the reason.

One thing that is not a sign: lean. If your truck sits lower on one side, that is a KDSS hydraulic balance issue. Our product page says it directly: KDSS drop kits, ours or any other manufacturer's, are not designed to fix or prevent KDSS lean. If lean is your problem, the system needs to be rebalanced on level ground.

What does the billet drop kit change?

Our KDSS Rear Sway Bar Drop Kit replaces the factory passenger-side fixed link with a longer link machined from 7075 billet aluminum, and keeps a spacer on the driver-side KDSS strut. It does the same job as a pair of rear drop spacers, but it removes the weak factory link at the same time. Here is what that gets you:

  • A fixed link designed to take a direct hit without bending
  • Correct sway bar position at full droop
  • Protection for the KDSS strut against misalignment damage
  • Full rear droop with extended-travel rear shocks
  • No more contact between the track bar and sway bar
  • Clearance for up to a 285/70/17 spare in the factory location

The kit fits KDSS-equipped fifth-generation 4Runners (2010 to 2024), the GX460, and the Prado 150. It comes in a few configurations: the billet fixed link with a driver-side spacer, the billet link alone for owners who already run 2 inch drop spacers from us or Treaty Oak, and the older spacer-only options. You can see all of them in the KDSS components collection, along with the rest of the billet KDSS parts.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a 3 inch lift always need a rear drop kit?

Fitment is about how the truck is used more than a single lift number. The kit is listed for KDSS 4Runner, GX460, and Prado 150 trucks, and it makes the most sense if you run extended-travel rear shocks, wheel harder than stock, or want a 285/70/17 spare in the factory spot. A lifted truck that never leaves pavement may not need it.

Can I install it in a driveway or do I need a shop?

A driveway works. Install it with the truck on its own weight, and use a floor jack to support the sway bar at the center. You will need a 14mm socket and a torque wrench. Torque the strut-side hardware to 75 ft-lbs with blue thread locker, the top frame-side bolt to 90 ft-lbs, and the lower hardware to 75 ft-lbs. On a truck that is a few years old or lives where roads get salted, soak the bolts with penetrating oil a few days ahead, because these bolts are known to seize and break if rushed.

Should I pair it with a track bar kit?

They solve different problems, and lifted trucks often need both. The drop kit handles the rear sway bar and KDSS strut. A track bar correction kit or an adjustable track bar keeps the rear axle centered. Since the drop kit also clears the sway bar away from the track bar, the two work well together.

Does this kit fix KDSS lean?

No. Lean is caused by an imbalance in the KDSS hydraulic system, not by sway bar position or suspension geometry. Rebalancing the system is what addresses lean.

Can I use spacers from another brand?

The billet link is designed to work with Dr. KDSS or Treaty Oak rear drop spacers at the 2 inch size. Other or unknown spacer brands are not compatible.
