KDSS Parts for the Toyota FJ Cruiser: What Actually Fits
The FJ Cruiser is the platform people forget has KDSS, and because of that there is less good information out there about what fits it. Here is a straight list of what I make that covers the FJ, what does not list FJ fitment, and how to check whether your truck even has the system. I am Dom, I build these parts.
Does the Toyota FJ Cruiser have KDSS?
Some do, not all of them. KDSS was offered on select FJ Cruiser trims rather than across the whole run, so you cannot assume based on year alone. Go look underneath.
A KDSS truck has hydraulic cylinders mounted at the ends of the front and rear sway bars, with hard lines running between them along the frame. If your sway bars bolt directly to the chassis with no cylinders and no plumbing, you have a conventional setup and most of my catalog does not apply to you. This takes thirty seconds with a flashlight and it saves ordering the wrong part.
Which Dr. KDSS parts fit the FJ Cruiser?
Two of my main parts list FJ Cruiser fitment directly:
- B.O.T.C.K. bolt on track bar correction kit, $220. Fitment covers the 4th and 5th Gen 4Runner, GX470, GX460, FJ Cruiser, and Prado 150 in one part number. This is the one most lifted FJs need.
- Dr. KDSS Track Bar, $430. The adjustable billet replacement bar lists FJ in its fitment alongside the G4 and G5 4Runner, GX460, GX470, and Prado 150.
Between those two you can correct axle centering on a lifted FJ either by relocating the mounting point or by replacing the bar with an adjustable one.
What does not list FJ Cruiser fitment?
I want to be clear about this rather than let you assume. Several of my front end parts list the 2010 and newer platforms specifically and do not name the FJ:
- KDSS front sway bar end adapters list 2010 and up 4Runner, GX460, Prado 150, and GX470.
- KDSS bushing bracket lists 2010 and up 4Runner, GX460, and Prado 150, plus GX470 when paired with the billet adapters.
- Front and rear KDSS sway bar billet clamps list 4Runner and GX460.
If you want any of those on an FJ, message me with your year first. I would rather confirm than have you order on the assumption that shared platform means shared part. Sometimes it does, sometimes the bar diameter or bend is different enough to matter.
Why does a lifted FJ Cruiser feel loose in the back?
Because lifting steepens the track bar angle and the axle starts moving sideways instead of straight up and down. Your track bar is a fixed length arm holding the axle centered laterally, and it swings on an arc. When the bar sits near level, that arc is shallow and the axle tracks cleanly. Lift the body and the bar tilts, so every bit of suspension travel now drags the axle across underneath you.
From the driver's seat that reads as the rear end wandering, darting when one wheel hits a bump, and feeling generally unsettled over uneven pavement. It also wears rear tires unevenly because the axle is no longer sitting where the factory put it. The correction kit raises the frame side pivot so the bar goes back toward level, which is why the fix is a bracket rather than anything exotic.
How do I pick the right correction kit version?
One measurement decides it. Park on level ground, measure from the ground to the center of the frame side track bar bolt, then from the ground to the center of the axle side bolt, and subtract.
- 1.5 to 2.99 inches of difference: Shorty version, or the bottom mounting hole on the Standard bracket.
- 3 inches or more: Standard version using the top hole.
If you plan to go taller later, buy the Standard, since it gives you more mounting options as the setup changes. Standard height brackets can potentially contact the frame under full suspension cycle, which is true of every bracket on the market and is a geometry issue rather than a manufacturing one. The Shorty is not offered for every model. Take the measurement rather than guessing and you will land on the right one.
Should I disconnect or remove KDSS on my FJ instead?
No, and I talk people out of this regularly. The articulation KDSS gives you is a real advantage off road, and removing it turns your FJ into a conventional sway bar truck. You paid for the system, it works, and the geometry problems from a lift are correctable with parts that cost less than undoing the system properly would.
Worth being clear on a related point. Steering pull and uneven tire wear from a lifted track bar have nothing to do with KDSS, so disabling the system does not fix them. If someone told you that a drop kit or disconnecting KDSS solves lean, that is also wrong. Lean comes from an imbalance in the hydraulic system itself and no bracket I sell changes it.
Frequently asked questions
Is the install something I can do myself?
Yes. The $220 kit is a true bolt on using factory mounting locations, no welding and no drilling, and most people finish in an hour or two with hand tools and a torque wrench. Soak your track bar bolts with penetrating oil a few days beforehand if your FJ is older or lives somewhere with road salt, because seized bolts are the main thing that turns this into a long job.
Do I need an alignment afterward?
Yes, get one after any track bar or suspension geometry change. You have moved where the axle sits, and an alignment costs far less than replacing tires worn on one edge.
My FJ does not have KDSS. Do you make anything for it?
The Dr. KDSS Track Bar works on KDSS equipped and non KDSS Toyota and Lexus platforms, so that one is still relevant to you. Most of the rest of my catalog is specifically for correcting KDSS geometry and will not do anything on a truck without the system.
